Los cables de media tensión están diseñados para funcionar a tensiones de hasta 18/30 (36) kv y se utilizan normalmente en redes de distribución de media tensión.
Los conductores pueden estar hechos de cobre o aluminio y suelen estar trenzados y compactados para formar un núcleo redondo y aislado.
Los tamaños de los cables pueden variar de 25 a 630 mm2 por núcleo, con 1 o 3 núcleos aislados que forman el cable.
Se pueden emplear diversas medidas de protección, como la construcción y los materiales para enterramiento directo, estanqueidad longitudinal y/o radial, protección contra termitas y seguridad contra incendios.
